Disguised dancer. A female dancer dressed as a male and taking a male part. Except in Russia, this was a common practice from the 1840s until the beginning of the twentieth century. The custom in Western Europe was killed by the virile dancing of Nijinsky and other male dancers of the Diaghilev company.
