A French term derived from the Italian “rivoltare,” to turn over. A male dancer’s step in which the dancer places one leg in the air and then gives the impression that he jumps over it with the other leg. Raise the R leg up in front, spring into the air and bring the L leg over the top of the R leg (either straight or bent in retiré) while turning to the right. Land facing the opposite direction on the L leg with the R leg raised in back. Rivoltade may be executed from various preparations and ended in various poses such as first or third (Russian) arabesque.
