Extension du Dos, also known as the Sphinx pose or cambré au sol, is a floor-based back extension exercise in ballet conditioning. The dancer lies prone on the floor and places the hands beside the chest, then presses the upper body upward, arching the thoracic spine and tilting the head back. The chest lifts and opens while the lower body remains grounded and stable. This exercise increases spinal extension flexibility, which is necessary for cambré (backbend) movements in ballet, and stretches the abdominal muscles and hip flexors. It prepares the spine for the deep backbends required in classical variations and adagio work.
